An Update from Samoa

Last week, Rob Floyd Associate Director Relief and Development, met with leaders from the Methodist Church in Samoa to discuss relief efforts. The leaders took Rob to a village, Satitoa, in South-East Upolu that suffered the loss of 15 lives as a result of the earthquake and tsunami. He has reported back on the impact of the disaster on this village and the relief effort that is planned for the area.

To date our partners in Samoa have already provided food, clothing and shelter for victims of the tsunami as well as significant funds to the government to help the relief effort for all victims

Thanks to donor support UnitingWorld will provide cooking utensils, household items, temporary facilities for the communities’ social groups and preschools, equipment for the preschool and assistance with education costs.

A Children’s Relief Fund has also been set up in recognition of the burden the disaster has placed on children. It will focus on trauma counseling, pre-school facilities, school fees and other education costs.

Tonga:

The Samoa appeal has been expanded to include affected communities in Northern Tonga where UnitingWorld funds will enable the purchase of a boat and motor. The boat will play a vital role in helping to rebuild community life in Niua as the people recover from the tsunami. The boat will assist the community to reach basic food such as root vegetables on a nearby island after their existing boats were destroyed by the tsunami.
