Kathy Pereira, Associate Director, Experience Programs, has been in contact with the Secretary for Development of Kiribati Protestant Church, Beenati Nenebati, after two powerful earthquakes stuck off the coast of Vanuatu this morning. The church was one of 11 Pacific nations to receive a tsunami warning and is very concerned about the fate of their low lying island. There have not yet been any reports of injury or damage in any of the affected areas.
UnitingWorld invites you to pray for Kiribati, Tuvalu and other locations under tsunami threat as they move to higher ground.
Also John Barr, Associate Director, Church Solidarity (Asia), has been engaged in ongoing contact with the Church of South India who advised of the impact of the floods and landslides in their Dioceses. After days of torrential rain the Southern states of India have been ravished by flooding, killing as many as 300 people and leaving millions displaced. The flood waters are beginning to recede however more rain is forecast for the area.
Please be in prayer for the Church of South India and the victims of the floods as they seek to respond to this disaster.
