Samoa Relief Effort to Focus on Early Recovery and Rebuilding

Following discussions between Rob Floyd, UnitingWorld Associate Director for Relief and Development, and our partners, the Methodist Church in Samoa and the Congregational Christian Church of Samoa, the relief effort of the Uniting Church in Australia will be focused on early recovery and rebuilding.

“Thank you for your concern and prayers. We are much encouraged and blessed by the support of prayers and well wishes from our brothers and sisters around the world. These are messages of faith and hope and thus have assisted us at these times of grief and loss, not only for the country and the Church as a whole but particularly those directly affected by the earthquake and tsunami,” said Revd Dr Eteuati L Tuioti, Principal, Piula Theological College, on behalf of the Methodist Church of Samoa.

”The loss of life among our Methodist congregations affected by the tsunami was minimal but the structural destruction was overwhelming. Now, it is two weeks passed since the destruction and has allowed us after engaging in relief efforts to focus on re-construction,” he said.

As many families and communities lost vital infrastructure for fishing, farming and livestock,  livelihood development is also a key part of reconstruction efforts..

Rob Floyd will be in Samoa from Tuesday 20th to Saturday 24th October to meet with our partners,  including the Congregational Christian Church of Samoa General Secretary Rev Dr Lutisone Salevao and Methodist Church in Samoa General Secretary Rev Tupo Folasa. He will visit affected areas and livelihood and rebuilding assessments will be made. This will shape the nature of our relief effort in the weeks and months ahead.

Please be in prayer for Rob Floyd and for the leaders of our Church partners as they discern the most effective focus of the ongoing UnitingWorld relief effort.
