Update from the Philippines

UnitingWorld has received the following update from our partner, the United Church of Christ in the Philippines (UCCP), regarding the aftermath of the floods and the relief effort.

With the arrival of a second typhoon, Parma, the people of Manila and other flood affected areas of the Philippines fear a further deluge and landslides. Many have evacuated their homes to relief centres as 16 towns and two cities in the Laguna area remain submerged.

There currently are more than 400,000 people occupying the many evacuation centers in Metropolitan Manila, some of which are UCCP churches.

In response to the urgent needs of those affected our partner has already distributed more than 1,800 emergency relief packs to over 50 communities in the Manila North, United Metropolis, North East Luzon and West Central Luzon Conferences. A further 500 packs are being prepared for devastated communities in the Nueva Ecija region.

With the saturated soil and near capacity dams, lakes and canals it is believed the flood waters could take up until Christmas to subside. The UCCP continues to respond to the thousands of people affected by Typhoon Ketsana flooding. The most immediate needs are food, water, clothing and medicines.
