Associate Director, Church Solidarity (Pacific), Mr Bruce Mullan has heard from UnitingWorld’s partner Church in Solomon Islands, following the 7.2 magnitude earthquake that struck yesterday.
The quake’s aftershock has affected the Western Province, located about 88km south east of Gizo. The island closest to the quake also sustained a two metre wave. According to ABC News, a total of about 500 homes have been damaged or destroyed.
Assembly General Secretary of the United Church in Soloman Islands, Mr Isaac Dakei said the Church office building has sustained minor damages, and is currently safe.
“The quake hit us at about 9.30am and our hospital patients have been evacuated to the Church area,” said Mr Dakei.
Please pray for those still at risk, and for those who have lost their homes and livelihood as a result of the earthquake.
