The World Council of Churces (WCC) has released a paper from a conference held earlier this year, entitled Conference on Protection and Reparations from “Climate Refugees”: Imperatives and Options.
The paper provides greater insight into this human rights issue, oulines the obligations of Nation States, and suggests strategies for further action on local, national and international levels.
The paper also recognises that the church’s role in this human rights issue is to ensure that “victims of climate change become active stakeholders.”
In 2009, UnitingWorld hosted an intern from Tonga, Oiner Moa, to undertake policy research on climate change mitigation and increase her capacity to advocate on behalf of people in Tonga.
“As a Pacific person I have been and advocating on climate change and its adverse effects on low lying islands and coastal areas.
“With the current attitude and ignorance of political leaders on resettlement, climate change will only remain an issue and we will only be able to dream about our right to live and right to survive this reality we did not start.”
