Never Too Far

Donate today to prevent deaths from tuberculosis in North Korea

In North Korea tuberculosis ruins lives, striking down whole families and devastating communities.  Infection rates are sky-high, and people there often die from this contagious disease because they have poor diets, unhealthy living conditions and little or no medicine or medical care. Young people like Hana are particularly vulnerable…

Hana has tuberculosis. Her ribs hurt from coughing. Her legs shake with the effort of standing. Her parents hide the pieces of strained cloth they use to wipe her lips during the night.

One in three people in Hana’s village has tuberculosis. None of them have the strength to walk to the Tuberculosis clinic in the nearby township – a two and a half day walk away. There is very little public transport in the country and none in this area. No one owns a car. Within a matter of years these tuberculosis sufferers will die for lack of relatively simple treatment that includes medicine and food.

That was before. Now, a bus is on its way. It is equipped with an X-ray machine and an ECG to help diagnose disease… health workers are on board to refer people for treatment. When it arrives in Hana’s village, people from all over the area come to seek help.

Hana and her parents never dreamed that someone would know about their situation, let alone care. Over time Hana will have access to food and medicine… her health will be restored.
