As a result of these changing attitudes, the quality of education in these schools has deteriorated, resulting in parents removing their children from schooling.
UnitingWorld is working with these schools, but providing and funding a teacher for an initial period of one year. Advocacy is undertaken with the Government to ensure funding is continued for the schools. The project extends to all school aged children in the diocese.
As a result, 4 000 Dalit children between the ages of five and 11 will be given the opportunity enhance their literacy skills.
More than 50 parent-teacher committees will be formed to allow parents to play a more active role in their children’s school and education. Government relations will be improved for the region, and employment will be made available for 50 new teachers.
