During the struggle for Timor Leste (East Timor) to achieve independence, many key church leaders were killed by the militia. The loss of Church leadership was substantial, having dire consequences for the Christian Communities in Timor Leste.

The current leadership development program for new Church leaders takes place in Indonesia. It takes six years, and is an expensive and isolating experience.

UnitingWorld aims to replace the present form of seminary training with more a local school to allow young leaders to develop into strong, educated pastors. This will allow them to remain in Timor Leste, and receive localised training.
