Sela Ahosivi: Nuku’alofa, Tonga
Sela is a second generation Tongan-Australian from Yass, NSW. She has good Tongan language skills and an understanding of “anga faka Tonga” (The Tongan Way). Sela finished her HSC in 2009 and is spending a GAP year in Tonga as a volunteer, providing English assistance to Tongan students as well as having the opportunity to see what life is like in her family’s country of origin.
Sela is teaching English at the Queen Salote College, the main Secondary girl’s school supported by the Free Wesleyan Church of Tonga. Having working knowledge of both Tongan and English languages will help students gain employment after their schooling. Tonga currently has a high unemployment rate, and education is vital for students’ future opportunities.
