Tee Makoni: Vava’u, Tonga
Tee is a second generation Tongan-Australian from Victoria. She has had limited contact with her family’s country of origin but does have good Tongan language skills and understanding of “anga faka Tonga” (The Tongan Way). Tee was keen to spend some time in Tonga as a volunteer to provide English services to the country, as well as to have the opportunity to see what life is like in her family’s country of origin.
Tee teaches English language at Mailefihi Si’iuilikutapu College, the main Free Wesleyan Church of Tonga Secondary school in Vava’u. Tonga currently has a high unemployment rate. By giving students a strong working knowledge of Tongan and English languages, her students’ employment opportunities will be enhanced upon graduation.
