Bougainville, Papua New Guinea

Bougainville is rich in copper and most people live in tropical, coastal areas. Historically there has been much conflict across the island, particularly in the south.

Only recently has some normality returned to the island. The province has been granted a degree of autonomy by the national government as part of the return to peaceful living.

YAP has been conducting workshops in the area for more than 6 years, particularly in the communities around Haku (north), Siwai (south) and Saposa Island. Local YAP members are actively engaged in peace-making activities. Now YAP’s focus is on Central and Southern Bougainville where a number of armed groups are still active.

Their positive contribution to the community has been noticed, with a number being elected to important community positions. YAP locals have begun approaching the armed groups in the area about participating in community discussions.
