India Community Development

23-Sep-09 078The majority of Sarenga’s population hail from the Tribal community and live well below the poverty line. The village depends on agriculture and on daily wage labor in the non–agricultural season for their livelihood. The community is severely burdened by chronic food insecurity, limited employment and a lack of accessible health care and education.

Many children are forced to spend their days caring for their families, collecting wood and fetching water for the village. This has resulted in a poor literacy rate, especially among women and girls. Additionally the community suffers from anemia, malnutrition, diarrhea, stomach ailments and many other health problems due to a lack of health care facilities.

In 10 focus villages in the Sarenga region the project provides support services to children of school going age to reduce dropouts and increase the literacy rate. The support offered to the children includes study materials, books and uniforms as well as games and play equipment.

Additionally the  project provides general health check ups as well as a community health and sanitation.

2011 Update

Centres for providing children with coaching have been established in several villages. Bags, school stationary and shoes have been distributed to the children who attend the coaching centre in each village. Milk, Eggs, Cereals, Dahlia and Pulses are provided at the coaching centres to provide nutritional support to the children.

The villagers’ participation in the affairs of the community has increased and they are now thinking of  extended and sustainable development into the future.

Training programs have been run for female teachers and the mothers of children involved in the program, aimed at increasing skills and awareness of income generation opportunities.
