Sudan Village Water Supply and Education

For the people of the Nachipo villages water shortage has long been a burden on everyday life. Before the inception of this project women and children were forced to walk more than 5 kilometres to fetch water each day.
This left little time for education and before this project almost every adult was illiterate and no child attended school. The Toposa communities in Nachipo had no schools or pre-schools in their local area.
UnitingWorld committed to the construction of several deep bore hole and a water capturing system as well as to establishing a well resourced pre-school for the community. In 2007/08 UnitingWorld made it possible for four boreholes to be drilled to bring water to these drought stricken communities. A preschool has also been established which now enrols 150 children up to 12 years of age.
In 2009, further boreholes were drilled, and educational workshops took place on the importance of good health and hygiene. The pre-school is nearing completion, and teachers have been provided by the Sudanese government to teach in the newly build school.
The project is supervised by Gladys Mananyu, Project Officer of the National Council of Churches, Sudan.
